- The medically treatable diseases presented in this table were selected according to Charlton's definition which is based on mortality, in specific age groups, which could potentially be avoided through appropriate medical attention (see Glossary for detailed definition). In 1999, there were 153 deaths that were identified as medically treatable according to this definition.
- Females accounted for 76 deaths from medically treatable diseases in 1999. Of these female deaths, more than a third (39.5%) were due to cervical cancer (30 deaths), followed by bacterial infections (21), and pneumonia and unqualified bronchitis (10). In comparison, there were 77 male deaths (50.3%) from medically treatable diseases. In total, over a third (35.1%) of these male deaths were from pneumonia and unqualified bronchitis (27), bacterial infections (19), and hypertensive disease (17).
- In the 1994-1998 period, three categories accounted for 69.7% of the 581 deaths from medically treatable diseases. These were cervical cancer (146 deaths), bacterial infections (132), and pneumonia and unqualified bronchitis (127).
