HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 31

  • Deaths from accidents and violence are shown in this table based on the LHA of usual residence of the decedent, and not the location where the death occurred. Please also refer to Table 36 which presents data on deaths under age 75 years from accidents and violence, and Appendix 3 which shows various indicators for deaths from motor vehicle traffic accidents, accidental falls and suicide.

  • During 1999, suicides (421 deaths) accounted for one in four deaths from accidents and violence. Accidental falls (367) and motor vehicle accidents (353) accounted for one in five each, and accidental poisoning (298), including overdoses, for one in six deaths from external causes.

  • The Age Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) for deaths from accidents and violence was 4.11 deaths per 10,000 standard population. Based on the usual residence of the decedent, there were 43 Local Health Areas (LHAs) which had ASMRs greater than the provincial rate (based on five or more deaths from external causes). Of these LHAs, 10 had values, which were at least twice the provincial rate. The five highest ASMRs, based on five or more deaths from accidents and violence, (number of deaths in parentheses) were:

    087/094Stikine/Telegraph Creek31.88(5)
    029Lillooet17.72(8)
    026North Thompson15.67(7)
    078Enderby13.39(10)
    050Queen Charlotte11.36(6)

  • There were 26 LHAs with accidents and violence ASMRs below the provincial rate (based on five or more deaths in the category), and Snow Country had no deaths from this cause in 1999. The five LHAs with the lowest ASMR values in 1999 for deaths from accidents and violence (based on five or more deaths in the category) were (number of deaths in parentheses):

    037Delta1.23(13)
    038Richmond1.88(35)
    047Powell River2.56(7)
    014Southern Okanagan2.60(9)

  • There were 353 deaths from motor vehicle accidents (MVA) in 1999 (ICD9 codes E810-E825). LHAs with 15 or more MVA deaths in 1999 were Surrey (30), Kamloops (15), and Prince George (15).

  • In 1999, there were 298 deaths from accidental poisoning which includes drug overdoses. The four LHAs where 15 or more residents died from this cause were Vancouver Downtown East Side (39), Surrey (38), Greater Victoria (36) and Vancouver City Centre (21). Please refer to Table 45/Figure 27 for drug-induced deaths by LHA.

  • Deaths from accidental falls occurred most often in 1999 to residents of Greater Victoria (44), Surrey (18), Vancouver West Side (18), Burnaby (15) and Central Okanagan (15).

  • Suicide took 421 lives in 1999 and was the tenth leading cause of death in the province. Five LHAs had 15 or more suicides in 1999; the highest were Surrey (37), Greater Victoria (26), Central Okanagan (23), Abbotsford (16), and Nanaimo (15).
