Table, Deaths Due to AIDS and HIV Infection by Age Group

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 28/FIGURE 17

All deaths where AIDS/HIV infection was noted on the record were reviewed to ensure that the underlying cause of death code reflected current knowledge of the diseases related to AIDS.

  • There were 100 deaths from AIDS/HIV infection in 1999; this was a 8.3% decrease from 109 deaths in 1998, and the lowest number of deaths since the first year AIDS/HIV was assigned the ICD9 codes 042-044 in 1987. From 1987 to 1999, there have been a total of 2,451 AIDS/HIV deaths in the province.

  • The number of deaths from AIDS/HIV peaked at 331 in 1994 and has decreased each year since. The largest decrease occurred in 1997 when the number of AIDS/HIV deaths dropped by more than 50% from 250 in 1996 to 115 in 1997.

  • Over the thirteen-year period from 1987-1999, the majority of (94.4%) of all AIDS/HIV infection deaths were males (2,313 deaths). Only 5.6% (138) of deaths from AIDS/HIV were in the female population in the same time period. Male deaths from this cause have decreased each year from 1994; the 88 male deaths in 1999 was only slightly higher than the 85 first recorded in 1987. Up to 1992, the number of female deaths from AIDS/HIV remained under six per year; and has ranged from a high of 23 in 1994 to a low of 12 in 1999.

  • More than three quarters of all people who died from AIDS/HIV infections were between 30 and 49 years old. The age distribution of AIDS/HIV deaths showed considerable variation from year to year. For the 1987-1999 period, out of every 100 deaths from AIDS/HIV infection:

    • less than 1 was in the under 20 age group (8 deaths)
    • 9 were in the 20-29 age group (218)
    • 42 were in the 30-39 age group (1,031)
    • 34 were in the 40-49 age group (837)
    • 10 were in the 50-59 age group (257)
    • 4 were at least 60 years of age (100)

  • Figure 17 graphs the number of deaths by age group for the most recent five-year period from 1995 to 1999. Generally, the number of AIDS/HIV deaths in each age group tended to decrease from year to year in most age groups. The 30-39 and 40-49 age groups showed the greatest changes. In the 30-39 age group, the annual number of deaths from AIDS/HIV infection decreased from a high of 123 in 1995 to 39 in 1998 and to 40 in 1999. The 40-49 age group's highest number of deaths (107) was in 1995, and after an increase from 36 deaths in 1997 to 47 in 1998, the number of deaths decreased to 39 in 1999.
