- There were 3.74 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 1999. This infant mortality rate was well below the rate for the 1994-1998 period (5.15).
- Only 13 Local Health Areas (LHAs) had 5 or more infant deaths in 1999, and 37 LHAs had no infant deaths in 1999. The highest infant mortality rate in 1999 (based on five or more infant deaths) was 13.08 in Courtenay LHA (7 infant deaths), and the lowest was 2.30 in Coquitlam LHA (5 infant deaths).
- The five LHAs with infant mortality ratios that were statistically significant and high in 1994-1998 (with number of deaths in parentheses, and rates) were:
