- There were 156 infant deaths (under one year of age) in 1999, for an infant mortality rate of 3.74 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. This represents a decrease from 1998, when there were 174 infant deaths and the infant mortality rate was 4.1. For time series data, please refer to Table 4 and Figure 6.
- In 1999, almost one third (31.4%) of infant deaths were to mothers under 25 years of age. There were 6.48 infant deaths per 1,000 live births for teenage mothers (under 20 years of age) and 5.15 infant deaths per 1,000 live births for mothers 20-24 years of age. For all remaining maternal age groups (25 to 40+ years of age), the infant mortality rate ranged from 2.68 to 3.64.
- Low birth weight (less than 2,500 grams) and very low birth weight (less than 1,500 grams) are risk factors for infant mortality. Approximately three fifths (60.3%) of the infants who died in 1999 had low birth weight (94 infant deaths), and 48.1% of the infants who died had very low birth weight (75).
- For births with very low birth weight (less than 1,500 grams), the infant mortality rate was 230.77 per 1,000 live births. The mortality rate decreased significantly with increased birth weight; there were 11.47 infant deaths per 1,000 live births with birth weight between 1,500 and 2,499 grams, and only 1.51 infant deaths for every 1,000 live births with normal birth weight (2,500 grams or more).
