- There were 38,819 live births with healthy birth weights (2,500 to 4,499 grams) in 1999. Out of approximately every 100 of these births:
- 5 were births to teenage mothers (1,879)
- 47 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (18, 092)
- 46 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (17,828)
- 3 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (1,020)
- There were 1,981 live births with low birth weight (less than 2,500 grams) in 1999. Out of approximately every 100 of these births:
- 5 were births to teenage mothers (91)
- 42 were births to mothers aged 20 and 29 years (826)
- 50 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (983)
- 4 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (81)
- There were 921 live births with high birth weight (4,500 grams or over) in 1999. Out of approximately every 100 of these births:
- 4 were births to teenage mothers (34)
- 45 were births to mothers aged 20 and 29 years (412)
- 50 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (457)
- 2 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (18)
- Nine out of ten (93.0%) births to mothers in the four maternal age groups from 20-24 to 35-39 had "healthy" birth weights. Approximately one in twenty-one (4.7%) of births in these age groups had low birth weight and one in forty-four (2.3%) had high birth weights.
- Of live births to teenage mothers (less than 20 years of age), 93.7% had healthy birth weights, 4.5% had low and 1.7% had high birth weights. For mothers in the 40 or older age group, 91.1% of live births had healthy birth weights, 7.2% had low and 1.6% had high birth weights.
