HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 12/FIGURE 10
- The province's 1999 Total Fertility Rate (TFR) was 1,412.54 births per 1,000 women of child bearing age (15 to 44 years of age). As shown in Table 3, Trends of Total Fertility Rates, this was the lowest rate in the last fifty years. (See definition of total fertility rate in Glossary.)
- There were 22 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant TFRs which were higher than the Provincial TFR in 1999. The five highest were:
| 049 | Bella Coola Valley | 2,527.51 |
| 005 | Creston | 2,306.87 |
| 029 | Lillooet | 2,110.61 |
| 054 | Smithers | 2,105.91 |
| 075 | Mission | 2,020.12 |
- There were 9 LHAs with statistically significant TFRs which were lower than the Provincial TFR in 1999. The five lowest were:
| 161 | Vancouver City Centre | 534.14 |
| 164 | Vancouver West Side | 950.98 |
| 162 | Vancouver Downtown E. Side | 1,030.91 |
| 061 | Greater Victoria | 1,121.95 |
| 038 | Richmond | 1,207.99 |
- There were 15.18 live births per 1,000 young women in the 15-19 age group in 1999. This age-specific fertility rate for 1999 was lower than the 1994-1998 teenage fertility rate of 18.83.
- For the 1994-1998 period, there were 42 LHAs with statistically significant teenage fertility rates which were higher than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
| 049 | Bella Coola Valley | 70.63 | (38) |
| 092 | Nishga | 63.54 | (23) |
| 053 | Upper Skeena | 58.46 | (67) |
| 083 | Central Coast | 58.44 | (18) |
| 087/094 | Stikine/Telegraph Creek | 50.60 | (17) |
The only LHAs which were among the five highest teenage fertility rates in both 1994 to 1998 and 1999 were Bella Coola Valley and Upper Skeena.
- There were 19 LHAs in the 1994-1998 period with statistically significant teenage fertility rates which were lower than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
| 164 | Vancouver West Side | 1.24 | (21) |
| 045 | West Vancouver-Bowen Is. | 1.69 | (13) |
| 161 | Vancouver City Centre | 4.27 | (23) |
| 044 | North Vancouver | 5.57 | (103) |
| 038 | Richmond | 5.79 | (156) |
All above LHAs except Richmond were also among the five LHAs with the lowest teenage fertility rates in 1999.
