Chart, Cesarean Deliveries of Live Born Infants by Local Health Area

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 10/FIGURE 9
  • There were 9,282 cesarean deliveries of live born babies in 1999, and 27,333 spontaneous vertex deliveries. Based on these data, the 1999 cesarean section rate was 222.38 per 1,000 live births, higher than 1995-1999 C-section rate of 207.86 (Appendix 3).

  • The ratio presented in Table 10 is ratio of the number of C-section births in the area to the number that would be expected based on the provincial rate and the number of live births in the area. The seven Local Health Areas (LHAs) with cesarean ratios which were statistically significant and high in 1999 (with the number of cesarean deliveries in parentheses) were:

    027Cariboo-Chilcotin1.54(122)
    011Trail1.45(55)
    080Kitimat1.45(46)
    028Quesnel1.44(100)
    020Salmon Arm1.39(75)
    022Vernon1.21(145)
    036Surrey1.06(1,132)

Cariboo-Chilcotin, Kitimat and Salmon Arm were also among the five LHAs with the highest C-section rates per 1,000 live births for 1995-1999 (Appendix 3).

  • The six LHAs with cesarean ratios which were statistically significant and low in 1999 (with the number of cesarean deliveries in parentheses) were:

    053Upper Skeena0.43(7)
    002Cranbrook0.56(31)
    006/007Kootenay Lake/Nelson0.61(33)
    052Prince Rupert0.66(32)
    043Coquitlam0.87(419)
    041Burnaby0.87(389)

Upper Skeena, Cranbrook, and Kootenay Lake/Nelson were also among the five LHAs with the lowest C-section rates per 1,000 live births for 1995-1999 (Appendix 3).

  • The 1999 provincial live birth rate was 10.36 live births per 1,000 population, which was lower than the five-year rate of 11.27 for the 1995-1999 period (Appendix 3.) The five LHAs with the highest live birth rates in 1999 (actual numbers in parentheses) were:

    049Bella Coola Valley16.86 (59)
    083Central Coast15.17(31)
    054Smithers14.97(281)
    060Peace River North14.35(441)
    081Fort Nelson14.26(94)

All of the above LHAs, with the exception of Central Coast, were also among the five LHAs with the highest live birth rates for the five-year period 1995-1999 (Appendix 3).

  • The five LHAs with the lowest live birth rates in 1999 (actual numbers in parentheses) were:

    045West Vancouver-Bowen Is.6.24(308)
    063Saanich6.45(389)
    064Gulf Islands6.45(94)
    069Qualicum6.60(264)
    017Princeton6.88(36)

All of the above, except Princeton, were among the five LHAs with the lowest live birth rates for 1995-1999 (Appendix 3).
