  • In 1999, there were 41,739 live births in the province to B.C. residents, 21,540 males and 20,199 females, as shown in Table 13. There were 10.36 live births per 1,000 population in 1999, compared to a birth rate of 11.27 for the 1995-1999 period (Table 10 and Appendix 3).

  • Of the 41,739 live births in 1999, almost half (45.6%) were first born (19,015), more than one third (35.7%) were second born (14,904), and about one in five (18.7%) was third born or greater (7,797).

  • The average age of B.C. women giving birth in 1999 was 29.2 years. The average maternal age of first live births was 27.5 years, compared to 30.0 years for mothers of second live births and 31.1 years for mothers having their third or more live birth.

  • In 1999, there were 2,005 live births to mothers younger than 20 years old, resulting in a teenage mother rate of 48.04 per 1,000 live births (calculated from data presented in this table). This 1999 rate was lower than the teenage mother rate of 50.03 for the 1995-1999 period (Appendix 3). There were 7,481 live births to mother aged 35 or older in 1999. The elderly gravida rate has increased in recent years; the 1999 rate was 179.23 per 1,000 live births, considerably higher than the 1995-1999 five-year rate of 161.25 (Appendix 3).

  • There were 294 stillbirths in 1999. Including stillbirths, there were 42,033 total births in 1999 to B.C. residents. The 1999 stillbirth rate was 6.99 per 1,000 total births, and was slightly higher than the five-year rate of 6.94 for the 1995-1999 period (Appendix 3).
