- In 1999, the average age of first-marriage brides was 27.7 years old, while first-marriage grooms were, on average, 29.8 years old.
- In recent decades, there has been a steady increase in the average age of first marriages as couples have chosen to establish their careers or live together first. On average, first-marriage brides in 1999 were 5.2 years older than first-marriage brides in 1977, while first-marriage grooms were 4.6 years older than first-marriage grooms in 1977.
- The average ages of brides and grooms, for first and later marriages combined, have also climbed steadily since 1977. In 1999, the average age of all brides was 31.8 years old, while grooms were 34.7 years old.
