Appendix 1
STATISTICAL SUMMARIES BY HEALTH REGION
LOCAL HEALTH AREA AND COMMUNITY

BRITISH COLUMBIA, 1999

Preamble to Appendix 1

British Columbia is a large, geographically diverse province. The majority of the population is concentrated in the southwestern corner of the province. Much of the rest of the province is sparsely populated with the majority of the remaining population concentrated in the major cities of Prince George, Kelowna, Kamloops, and Nanaimo, or along the border with the United States. Health care services tend to be concentrated in the areas of greater population, with the tertiary care facilities in the metropolitan areas of Vancouver and Victoria.

Appendix 1 provides summary details of the 1999 vital statistics for the health regions (HR), local health areas (LHA), and for incorporated communities within each LHA. HRs and LHAs correspond to, or can be aggregated to, the boundaries of the regional health authorities. Information presented includes the number of live births, deaths, marriages, and stillbirths by gender, which occurred in the HRs and LHAs. Live births and stillbirths are assigned to the usual residence of the mother. Deaths are assigned according to the usual residence of the decedent. Marriages are based on the place where the marriage ceremony was performed.

Population and the five-year average 1995-1999 life expectancy data were produced by BC STATS.

NOTES TO APPENDIX 1 TABLES

Live births, stillbirths and deaths are assigned to communities based on the postal code of usual residence.

Marriages are assigned according to the place where the marriage ceremony was performed, and include non-BC residents.

Totals for gender include cases with unknown gender.

Population estimates and information on life expectancy (1995-1999) were obtained from BCSTATS, Minsitry of Finance and Corporate Relations.

† C=City, T=Town, VL=Village, DM=District Municipality, IGD=Indian Government District

The boundaries of some communities include areas in more than one LHA.

Vancouver Total may include unspecified Vancouver addresses.
