DRUG-INDUCED DEATHS BY CAUSE

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 44/FIGURE 26

  • There were 529 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 1998 and 2,402 drug-induced deaths in 1993-1997.

  • Approximately three quarters of drug-induced deaths in 1998 and 1993-1997 (75.6% and 73.0% respectively) were the result of accidental poisonings by drugs, medicaments and biologicals (400 deaths in 1998 and 1,754 deaths in 1993-1997).

  • Approximately one fifth of the drug-induced deaths (19.0%) were the result of suicide by drugs, medicaments and biologicals in 1993-1997 (457 deaths). The proportion of suicides among drug-induced deaths (15.3%) was slightly lower in 1998 (81 deaths).

  • Of all the 419 suicide deaths in B.C. in 1998 (presented in Table 30), 81 suicides, or one in five suicide deaths (19.3%), were drug-induced.
