- There were 529 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 1998. This grouping of underlying causes of death includes drug dependence, accidental drug poisonings, and suicides involving drugs.
- Almost three quarters (73.9%) of all drug-induced deaths in 1998 were males (391). Overall, out of all causes of death, drug-induced deaths accounted for 2.7% of all male deaths and 1.0% of all female deaths in B.C. in 1998.
- In 1998, 60.1% (318) of the drug-induced deaths in the province occurred in the 25-44 age group. This represented one in five deaths (19.6%) from any cause in this age group.
- For males, 90.6% of drug-induced deaths were in the 25-44 and 45-64 age groups (354 deaths in total). Female drug-induced deaths were similarly concentrated in these age groups, and accounted for 80.4% (111 out of 138) of the female deaths in this category.
