Note: PYLL - Potential Years of Life Lost, denotes the total number of years of life lost from an established life expectancy (75 years).
PYLLSR - PYLL Standardized Rate per 1,000 standard population (Canada 1991 Census).
Previous reports used an older standard population, therefore the rates should not be compared to those shown here.
Cause of death categories may differ from other tables.
Total percentage may not add up to 100 due to rounding.
Non-residents and one infant death (due to congenital anomalies) with gender unknown are excluded.

PYLL Standardized Rates by Age Group and Gender

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 35/FIGURE 20

  • In 1998, there were 276 deaths in the under 15 years old age group, excluding one infant death with gender unknown. These deaths resulted in a total of 19,849 potential years of life lost (PYLL). Congenital anomalies and perinatal conditions accounted for 25.9% and 24.8% of PYLL, respectively. The Potential Years of Life Lost Standardized Rate (PYLLSR) in this age group was 6.20 years of life lost per 1,000 standard population.

  • In the 15-24 age group, a total of 16,013 potential years of life were lost from the 293 deaths in 1998. Males accounted for almost three quarters of the deaths (74.4%) and PYLL (74.3%) in this age group. The PYLLSR for all causes of death in this age group was 4.57 years of life lost per 1,000 standard population. The male PYLLSR (6.66) was considerably higher than the rate for females (2.40). There were 94 motor vehicle traffic accident deaths in this age group; these deaths were responsible for 5,160 potential years of life lost, or 32.2% of the PYLL in the 15-24 age group.

  • In the 'prime of life' 25-44 age group, there were 1,626 deaths in 1998 and a total of 61,880 potential years of life lost. Males accounted for approximately two thirds of these deaths (67.8%) and PYLL (68.3%). For males, suicide and accidental poisoning each accounted for over 5,500 potential years of life lost. These causes combined were responsible for one third of the PYLL in the male age group. For females in the 25-44 age group, only cancers had this level of PYLL (6,040); cancers (malignant neoplasms) accounted for 30.8% of the PYLL for female deaths in this age group. The PYLLSR for all causes of death was 22.73 for males (per 1,000 standard male population) and 10.39 for females.

  • In the 45-74 age group, a total of 100,905 potential years of life were lost from 9,430 deaths in 1998. Deaths from cancers resulted in 42,740 potential years of life lost, and accounted for 35.5% of male and 53.2% of female PYLL in this age group. Coronary heart disease was the next most important cause of death in this age group with 13,408 PYLL.
