HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 30
  • Accidents and violence, also called external causes, include all deaths from accidents, suicide, homicide, and deaths where it could not be determined if it was accidental or intentional. In 1998, there were 2,016 deaths from accidents and violence among B.C. residents.

  • Out of every 1,000 of all deaths in 1998:

    • approximately 927 deaths were from natural causes (please refer to Table 21)

    • 73 deaths were from accidents and violence, of which:

      • 16 were accidental poisonings, including drug overdoses (433)
      • 15 were suicides (419)
      • 14 were motor vehicle accidents (398)
      • 13 were accidental falls (358)
      • 2 were homicides (55)
      • 1 was drowning/submersion (33)>
      • 1 was from fire/flames (33)
      • 10 were other accidental deaths (287)

  • The Age Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) for deaths from accidents and violence was 4.74 deaths per 10,000 standard population in 1998. The ASMR for males was 6.97; the ASMR for females was 2.55 in 1998. On average, males accounted for seven out of ten deaths from accidents and violence (69.6%).

  • The four most important causes of death from accidents and violence are shown below, ranked by number of deaths in 1998. ASMRs per 10,000 standard population are shown in parentheses.

    - accidental poisoning433(1.05)
    - suicide419(0.99)
    - motor vehicle accidents398(0.99)
    - accidental falls358(0.74)

  • For males and females, the most important causes of death from accidents and violence are shown below, ranked by number of deaths in 1998. ASMRs per 10,000 male or female standard population are shown in parentheses.
