DEATHS DUE TO AIDS AND HIV INFECTION BY AGE GROUP
BRITISH COLUMBIA, 1994-1998

Deaths Due to AIDS and HIV Infection by Age Group

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 28/FIGURE 17

All deaths where AIDS/HIV infection was noted on the record were reviewed to ensure that the underlying cause of death code reflected current knowledge of the diseases related to AIDS.

  • There were 108 deaths from AIDS/HIV infection in 1998, a 6.1% decrease from 115 deaths in 1997 and a dramatic 56.8% decrease from 250 deaths in 1996. There have been a total of 2,350 AIDS/HIV deaths since 1987 when AIDS and HIV were assigned new ICD9 codes (042-044).

  • The highest annual number of deaths from AIDS/HIV infection was 331 deaths in 1994. Since 1994, the annual number of deaths from this cause has been steadily decreasing in all age groups, with the most notable decline (75.2% or 118 deaths) occurring in the 30 to 39 age group. Overall, the annual number of deaths from AIDS/HIV infection decreased by a notable 67.4% or 223 deaths from 1994 to 1998.

  • Over the twelve-year period from 1987-1998, 94.6% of all AIDS/HIV infection deaths were males (2,224 deaths). Only 5.4% (126) of deaths from AIDS/HIV were in the female population in the same time period.

  • The age distribution of AIDS/HIV deaths showed considerable variation from year to year. For the 1987-1998 period, out of every 100 deaths from AIDS/HIV infection:

    • less than 1 was in the under 20 age group (7 deaths)

    • 9 were in the 20-29 age group (215)

    • 42 were in the 30-39 age group (991)

    • 34 were in the 40-49 age group (798)

    • 10 were in the 50-59 age group (243)

    • 4 were at least 60 years of age (96)

  • Figure 17 graphs the number of deaths by age group for each year in the five-year period from 1994 to 1998 for comparison purposes. Generally, the number of AIDS/HIV deaths in each age group tended to decrease from year to year in most age groups. The 30-39 and 40-49 age groups showed the greatest changes. In the 30-39 age group, the annual number of deaths from AIDS/HIV infection decreased from a high of 157 in 1994 to 39 in 1998. The 40-49 age group's highest number of deaths (107) was in 1995, and this was the only age group to show an increase in deaths from 1997 to 1998 (36 deaths in 1997 and 47 in 1998).
