  • There were 4.03 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 1998. This infant mortality rate was below the rate for the 1993-1997 period (5.41).

  • Only 11 Local Health Areas (LHAs) had 5 or more infant deaths in 1998, and 28 LHAs had no infant deaths in 1998.

  • The four LHAs with infant mortality ratios that were statistically significant and high in 1993-1997 (with number of deaths in parentheses, and rates) were:
