1998 BRITISH COLUMBIA MARRIAGE FACTS
  • Saturday, August 1 (the first day of the August long weekend) was the most popular day of the year for couples to marry (710 marriages) in 1998. All Saturdays from the beginning of July to the second weekend in September and May 16 (the start of the Victoria Day Weekend) were the busiest days for weddings with over 450 weddings each Saturday. Valentine's Day (also a Saturday) was the next most popular day with 411 weddings.

  • One third of weddings in 1998 fit this profile: the wedding was on a Saturday and both the bride and groom were B.C. residents who were marrying for the first time. They were both under 40 years of age or there was less than 10 years difference in their ages.

    Of all couples married by Religious Representatives:

  • 91% were both B.C. residents and in 5% neither was a B.C. resident.

  • 46% were both under 30 years of age and in 80% both were under 40.

  • 7% had more than 10 years difference between their ages.

  • 70% were both marrying for the first time, and 14% had both been married before.

  • 69% chose a wedding date between May and September.

  • 80% chose a Saturday, and 8% chose a Sunday for their wedding.

    Of all couples married by Marriage Commissioner:

  • 87% were both B.C. residents and in 8% neither was a B.C. resident.

  • 29% were both under 30 years of age and in 68% both were under 40.

  • 11% had more than 10 years difference between their ages.

  • 53% were both marrying for the first time, and 22% had both been married before.

  • 61% chose a wedding date between May and September.

  • 57% chose a Saturday, 11% chose a Friday, and 11% chose a Sunday.
