APPENDIX 2
DETAILED CAUSE OF DEATH BY GENDER AND AGE
BRITISH COLUMBIA, 1998
Preamble to Appendix 2
Appendix 2 describes detailed causes of death by cause, gender, and age for deaths which occurred to residents of British Columbia in the province during 1998. Causes of death are coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD9), which defines the underlying cause of death as "(a) the disease or injury which initiated the train of events leading directly to death, or (b) the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury." Although many causes of death in ICD9 are specified by four digits, these have been summed to the three digit level and are only presented when there were at least five deaths from the specified cause. Statistics using four digit ICD9 codes, and those for rare causes of death, are available upon request.
Deaths which are not from natural causes (suicide, homicide, and accidents) may be subject to investigation by the coroner. At the time that information is produced for the Annual Report, deaths which are still under investigation are included in ICD9 799.9 Other unknown or unspecified cause in the Annual Report. The proportion of deaths in this category varies depending upon when the Annual Report is produced.
