What's New
Birth Registration and the new Family Law Act
On March 18, 2013, the BC government introduced a new law that sets out rules for determining a child's parents whether the
child was conceived through natural or assisted reproduction, including surrogacy.
To accommodate the provisions of the new Act, the Vital Statistics Agency has developed new forms and procedures for registering
a child's birth.
Children born in British Columbia can be registered using our secure and easy online birth
registration service unless one or more of the following apply.
- Your child's birth is the result of assisted reproduction or surrogacy.
- Your child is over 1 year old.
- You don't have access to a computer or internet.
In these circumstances, call the Agency at 250-952-2681 in Victoria or 1-888-876-1633 elsewhere in BC, and we will send you the
required registration package and answer any questions you may have about registering your child's birth.
